The man who eventually gave his initial to the house is also the man to whom we owe the iconic Cuvée. "Only the best" was the sole motto that drove the winemaker Georges Hermann Mumm. In 1876, as a tribute to the wine, Mumm chose to adorn the bottle with a red silk ribbon. It served as a symbol of the highest French honors, the royal "Ordre et Militaire de Saint Louis" and the "Grand Cordon de la Légion d'Honneur". Just as the champagne was for the ruler, so great became the fame of the Cordon Rouge wine, so much so that it became the symbol of the house and of champagne as a whole.
