In 1821, William Smith founded the Wolfburn distillery on the outskirts of Thurso, named after a nearby stream. Built from robust Caithness flagstone, the distillery quickly developed into a significant malt whisky producer. The distillery remained in family ownership until the 1850s and may have operated sporadically until the 1860s, although it was recorded as a ruin on a map in 1872. A new building was erected near the old site.

The distillery's logo, designed in 2011, is based on a 16th-century drawing by Conrad Gessner and refers to the sea wolf, a local legend said to bring good luck. The logo symbolizes the distillery's deep connection to Scottish culture and history.

"Langskip" is the Scottish Gaelic word for "longship," which was used by the Vikings for both warlike endeavors and everyday tasks. The Wolfburn Langskip matures for five years in ex-bourbon casks, which gives it a distinctive aroma and a characterful taste. The Wolfburn Langskip is bottled at cask strength, meaning in its original concentration directly from the cask, without the addition of water. In addition, no artificial colorings are used, and the whisky is not chill-filtered to preserve the natural quality and purity of the aromas.
