Thoroughbred horse racing, a private railway carriage and the ‘Old Fashioned’ cocktail were all part of Colonel James E. Pepper’s life. He took great pride in producing his whisky according to his grandfather’s original recipe. Today, following years of research and the discovery of a document dating from 1887 detailing the production methods and the exact composition of the mash, Georgetown Trading Co. produces the 1776. The distillery is now seeking to produce further James E. Pepper whisky varieties that correspond to the ‘old style’ of the original. The 1776 is bottled at 92 proof. This 1776 has been aged for 4–5 years.

The 1776 James E. Pepper Straight Rye Whisky, bottled at 100 proof, is characterised by its unfiltered bottling and a mash comprising 95 per cent rye and 5 per cent malted barley.

This whisky is aged for 3–4 years and is distilled at the Lawrenceburg Distillery in Indiana. For the final bottling, it is carefully brought to drinking strength by hand at the historic James E. Pepper Distillery, using water from the historic limestone well. This process underlines the commitment to quality and tradition that makes the 1776 James E. Pepper Straight Rye Whiskey such an exceptional whisky.
