Ardbeg is a distillery with a long tradition: whisky was unofficially distilled here as early as 1794, before it was officially founded by John McDougall in 1815. The name "Ardbeg" comes from Gaelic and means "small hill," a reference to its location on the south coast of Islay, which is famous for its heavily peated and maritime whiskies.
