The Ron Matusalem brand originated in Santiago de Cuba, where it was founded in 1872 by brothers Benjamin and Eduardo Camp, along with their partner Evaristo Álvarez. The name "Matusalem" comes from the biblical figure Methuselah, who was said to have lived to be 969 years old, symbolizing the long aging process and quality of the rum. Over the years, Ron Matusalem faced various challenges, including changes in ownership and production sites due to political and economic factors. After the Cuban Revolution in 1959, the brand changed hands, and production was moved to the Dominican Republic, where it continues to thrive.

The Insolito is aged for 3 years in ex-Tempranillo Solera casks and then blended with the legendary 15 Solera Gran Reserva from their own house. The rosé color is due to the activated charcoal filtration used.

The Insolito continues to appear only in limited editions.
