The story of Johnnie Walker began in 1819 when young John Walker, after the sudden death of his father, sold the family farm to open a grocery and spirits shop. As the quality of single malts was unreliable, John began blending his own spirits after blending was legalized, to ensure consistent quality. His son continued this tradition after his father's death in 1857 and laid the foundation for today's whisky empire.

Johnnie Walker Black Label is considered an icon among blended Scotch whiskies. Made from whisky aged at least 12 years, all four Scottish whisky regions – Highlands, Lowlands, Speyside, and Islands – are utilized.
