The company's founder, Don Andrés Brugal Montaner, left his homeland Spain to seek his fortune in the Caribbean. After learning the art of rum making in Cuba, he moved to the Dominican Republic around 1855, specifically to Puerto Plata. In this city, Brugal's rums are still aged today. After a few years, he developed his own production process there, ensuring consistent quality of the rums. This process remains a well-kept secret to this day, passed down from generation to generation.
Brugal LEYENDA 5 Years Old is aged in American bourbon white oak barrels and then in Spanish red oak barrels that previously held sherry.
