Description
Bain's Single Grain Whisky, the first of its kind in South Africa, is named after Andrew Geddes Bain, a Scottish engineer who completed the pass road from Wellington to the interior in 1853. The James Sedgwick Distillery honored this historic achievement in 2009 with the introduction of this special whisky. Located at the foot of the famous Bain's Kloof Pass, the distillery feels a strong connection to Bain's legacy.
The whisky undergoes careful maturation, beginning with a three-year aging period in first-fill bourbon casks. It is then re-casked to optimally extract the aromas and flavors from the cask walls. Subsequently, Bain's Single Grain Whisky matures for another 18 to 30 months in fresh first-fill bourbon casks to enhance its depth and complexity.
Only the finest South African grain is used for production, combined with pure water that flows over 850-million-year-old sandstone and fynbos. The distillation process takes place in column stills and is led by Andy Watts, Head of Whisky Excellence, and Jeff Green, Distillery Manager.
