In 1921, the traveling pharmacist Hugo Kümmerling developed his first herbal mixture on an alcohol base in Deesbach, Thuringia. The result was a bitter liqueur he called "Boonekamp." Over the years, he continued to refine the recipes for his unique herbal mixtures, which are still valid today. When Johannes Presch, the founder's son-in-law, rebuilt and modernized the production facility in Bodenheim near Mainz in 1963, the tradition was continued.
