The inspiration for this whiskey comes from the Battle of Kinsale. It was the decisive battle in England's successful endeavor to bring Gaelic Ireland back under control.

Hugh Roe O'Donnell, also known as Red Hugh, was a leading figure in Gaelic Ireland and ruled as King of Tyrconnell in Ulster from 1461 to 1505. He was then the head of the O'Donnell dynasty, and after the defeat at the Siege of Kinsale, he traveled to Spain to seek support from King Philip III, where he mysteriously died. He was buried near the Spanish wine region of Rioja.

Red Earl Blended Irish Whiskey is a combination of Irish whiskey from ex-Bourbon casks and triple-distilled malt from ex-Sherry casks, aged for 45 months, and then married for at least 4 months in ex-Rioja casks. The Rioja casks were chosen for their spicy fruit notes and as a sign of respect for Red Hugh's own resting place near the Rioja region in Spain.
