Hugh "The Great Earl" O'Neill, a celebrated general, remained undeterred despite all odds. After rescuing Red Hugh O'Donnell following his escape from Dublin Castle, they fought side by side with Juan del Aguila, "the Spanish Count," at the Battle of Kinsale in 1601.

Leaving Ireland in 1607 during the Flight of the Earls, he died nine years later in Rome, where he is still buried and immortalized in a fresco in the Vatican City.

Great Earl Single Grain Irish Whiskey is a combination of rechar-barrelled Grain Irish Whiskey and Virgin Oak Grain, aged for 45 months, then married together to spend a further minimum of 3 months in Ex-Sangiovese casks. The Sangiovese casks used are sourced exclusively from the Lazio region of Italy; a nod to The Great Earl's final resting place in the Vatican City in Rome.
