The residents of Luss, a village on the west side of Loch Lomond, used Inchmoan as a source of peat fuel for centuries. The name "Inchmoan" means "the island of peat" in Gaelic, which underscores the historical significance of the island.

Inchmoan 12 Years Old is a blend of malt whiskies distilled in two different types of stills: traditional swan-neck pot stills and straight-neck pot stills. This combination aims to create a whisky with a distinct peaty character, also exhibiting notes of smoke and spice.

The whisky matures for a period of 12 years in two types of casks: re-charred American oak casks and refill American Bourbon casks. These casks impart sweet vanilla notes to the whisky, complementing the unique peaty style for which the Loch Lomond Distillery is known.
