VAT 69 is a Blended Scotch Whisky that holds its own among well-known brands such as Johnnie Walker, Chivas Regal, Grant's Whisky, and Ballantine's. The creation of VAT 69 is based on an extensive selection process, during which William Sanders and his son developed numerous blends. The ultimately selected blend, which came from cask number 69, impressed with its balanced and robust flavor profile and was established as the basis for the VAT 69 brand. The name is derived from the cask number and the distillation process, with "VAT" referring to the English word for blending vessel.

The bottling of the whisky began only in 1880, after William Mark Sanders convinced his father to market the whisky beyond cask sales. This innovation represented a significant development in the whisky industry. The choice of a port wine bottle for bottling VAT 69 offered practical advantages and contributed to the product's unique presentation.
