In 1790, 25-year-old George Sandeman, son of a wealthy Scottish cabinetmaker, asked his father for a loan of £300. His goal was to establish himself as a wine merchant in London. George Sandeman then founded the company Sandeman, which later became one of the world's leading suppliers of Port wine and Sherry.

From the outset, Sandeman specialized in the production and trade of Port wine and Sherry. Unlike today, he did not conduct his business from his own offices, but from Tom's Coffee House in Birchin Lane, London. At that time, business was often concluded on a "gentleman's word." George Sandeman quickly gained an excellent reputation, which still characterizes the Sandeman company today.
