Caol Ila (pronounced "Cull Eela") is Gaelic for "The Sound of Islay," the strait separating the Hebridean islands of Islay and Jura. Somewhat hidden on the rugged east coast, fine smoky whiskies have been produced there by the islanders since 1846. The barley used is still malted in Port Ellen, and the pure spring water comes from the nearby Loch Nam Ban limestone.
