Unofficially, distillation has been taking place at the Ardbeg Distillery since 1794 – in 1815, the distillery was purchased by John McDougall and officially opened under the name Ardbeg.

"Ardbeg" comes from Gaelic and translates to "small hill."

The distillery is located on the south coast of the Islay whisky region.

Over 25 years ago, in 1997, the Ardbeg 17 Years Old The Ultimate Committee Exclusive was one of the first bottles to leave the distillery after its reopening. This unusually delicate, yet unmistakably Ardbeg whisky quickly captured the hearts of the Ardbeg Committee and set an extraordinary standard for the future.

When the whisky was retired in 2004, many believed they would never see it again. However, its return was carefully prepared in silence. Dr. Bill Lumsden, the Master Distiller, meticulously based the new bottling on the original, tracing the flavor profile note for note, and, just like back then, bottled it at 40% ABV to continue the tradition.
