Matthew Gloag, the founder's grandson and the brand's namesake, took over the family business in 1896, almost a century after its founding in 1800.

Just one year later, he created a new whisky blend, which he named "The Grouse Brand," expecting many hunters to stop in Perth during hunting season. His daughter designed the accompanying label, depicting Scotland's national bird, the red grouse. The whisky immediately gained great popularity and sold so well that after only a few years, the name was changed to "The Famous Grouse," and the word "Brand" was dropped.

This whisky is the successor to the well-known "The Black Grouse" and is characterized by a higher proportion of peated malts, including a rare bottling from Glenturret. These carefully selected, peated malts give "Smoky Black" its characteristically smoky yet smooth taste. The profile is complemented by exceptional grain whiskies, which harmoniously round off the taste and give the whisky its special depth and complexity.
