At that time, due to the shortage of legally available alcohol, people resorted to using low-quality or even denatured alcohol, which they infused with juniper and other spices in their own bathtubs. The herbs and spices were left to steep in the alcohol for several days or weeks to improve its flavour and mask its inferior quality. This is how the term ‘Bathtub Gin’ came about.
