Founded in 1826 by James Henderson, the Pulteney Distillery, named after the then-newly established Pulteneytown district in Wick, stands as one of Scotland's northernmost distilleries. Its unique location, only accessible by sea, shaped its history: barley arrived by ship, and whisky left the distillery through the hands of workers who were also herring fishermen.

A significant modernization step took place in 1958 under J&G Stodart Ltd, where the old floor maltings gave way to today's visitor center. After various corporate takeovers, the distillery eventually ended up with Inver House Distillers, who acquired it in 1995. With the introduction of Old Pulteney 12 Years Old in 1997, a new era began.

Today, far removed from its past as a herring fishing port, the Pulteney Distillery remains a proud part of Wick. Under the leadership of Malcolm Waring, the dedicated team produces around 900,000 liters of single malt Scotch whisky annually.

The Old Pulteney 25 Years Old first matures in American ex-Bourbon oak casks before receiving its finish in Spanish ex-Oloroso oak casks.
