Mortlach Distillery, founded in 1823, is one of the oldest and most renowned distilleries in Scotland's Speyside region. Known as "The Beast of Dufftown," Mortlach has made a name for itself with its uniquely complex and robust single malts. The distillery uses an unusual 2.81-fold distillation process, which gives its whiskies their characteristic depth and complexity.

In 2018, Mortlach introduced the Dufftown Trio, consisting of 12, 16, and 20-year-old whiskies. The 12-year-old Mortlach is distilled in the "Wee Witchie" stills and aged in a mix of European oak ex-sherry casks and American oak ex-bourbon casks. The number 2.81 on the label refers to Mortlach's special distillation process, where the whisky is distilled 2.81 times. This process, also called "The Way," uses six stills, with one-fifth of the distillate distilled a third time in the small "Wee Witchie" still.
