The Ilegal Mezcal Joven Special Edition 40% Vol. 0.7 L is a distinctive mezcal from Oaxaca that impressively reflects the traditional craftsmanship of Mexican agave distillation. As the youngest representative of the Ilegal Mezcal series, this Mezcal Joven stands for authenticity, traditional production methods, and the unmistakable character of high-quality agave spirits from Mexico. It is based on carefully harvested agave, prepared using classical methods. The agave hearts are slowly cooked over a eucalyptus wood fire, developing the typical style of a traditional Oaxaca mezcal. This is followed by a double distillation under the guidance of Master Distiller Señor Hernandez, before the mezcal is bottled after a short resting period in steel tanks.


The story behind Ilegal Mezcal is closely linked to its name. In the early 2000s, co-founder John Rexer ran the famous "Cafe No Se" in Antigua, Guatemala. The regulars of the bar – often musicians, writers, and creative minds – developed a great enthusiasm for handcrafted mezcal from Oaxaca. Since the legal framework at the time severely restricted export to Guatemala, the coveted agave distillate was brought across the border in barrels. Over time, this developed into a cult brand within the international bar scene. Since Bacardi's entry in 2017, new international markets have opened up for Ilegal Mezcal, while the focus remains on traditional production and authentic Mexican mezcal craftsmanship.
