Description
The Knappogue Castle 16 Years Old Twin Wood Sherry Cask Finished is a long-matured single malt Irish whisky that combines traditional triple distillation with a two-stage cask maturation process. The whisky first spends 15 years and 3 months in ex-bourbon casks before being finished for a further 9 months in sherry casks. This brings its total maturation period to 16 years. The sherry cask finish complements the base character, which is characterised by American oak, with additional fruity, nutty and spicy notes. Knappogue Castle 16 Years is bottled at 43% ABV. Its limited edition of just 1,900 bottles, each of which has been numbered and signed, makes it particularly exclusive.
The history of Knappogue Castle Whiskey is closely linked to Mark Edwin Andrews and the eponymous Irish castle. Andrews and his wife purchased Knappogue Castle in 1966 and devoted themselves to its restoration, whilst Mark Andrews simultaneously collected and matured selected stocks of Irish whiskey. Cases deemed particularly suitable were later bottled under the castle’s name. This legacy is continued by the family today. With its long maturation in bourbon casks followed by a sherry cask finish, the 16 Years Twin Wood represents a particularly elaborately matured variant of the brand. The combination of 16 years’ maturation, triple distillation, Twin Wood maturation and limited edition status also makes it of interest to collectors of matured Irish single malts. The 0.7-litre bottle is available in a gift box.
