The Royal Lochnagar Distillery is one of the smallest distilleries in Scotland, near the River Dee. The distillery was named after the nearby mountain Lochnagar. The distillery was founded in 1845 by John Begg. Queen Victoria bought the castle next to the distillery in 1848. John was appointed a royal warrant holder, and the Lochnagar Distillery thus received the prefix "Royal".

A mysterious white stallion is depicted on the bottle. He tells the legend of the thick and cool mist that surrounded the distillery on the Royal Deeside until a proud stallion, white as snow, emerged.

The Royal Lochnagar 16 Years Old Special Release is part of Diageo's Special Release series 2021. All whiskies in this series are bottled at cask strength and are strictly limited.

This whisky is matured in Refill American Oak Casks and European Oak Casks.
