Matthew Gloag, the founder's grandson of the same name, took over the family business 96 years after its establishment in 1800. A year later, he created a new blend, which he named "The Grouse Brand" (Grouse = moorhen) in anticipation of many hunters stopping in Perth during the hunting season. His daughter designed the matching label featuring Scotland's national bird. The whisky immediately sold so well that within just a few years, "The Famous" was added to the name, and the designation "Brand" was simply dropped. And so the popular whisky is still called today: The Famous Grouse.

The Famous Grouse Toasted Cask was bottled in July 2018. The whisky belongs to Famous Grouse's Cask Series and is already the third bottling. The Famous Grouse Toasted Cask matures in freshly charred, brand-new oak casks.
