The distillery originally relied on sea trade and experienced a turning point in 1960 with the construction of a new road, which improved logistics. After a brief closure in the 1930s and the last ship arrival in 1993, the road became the main supply route. In 2006, after being acquired by Burn Stewart Distillers, the brand profile received a modern redesign. The water for the whiskies comes from limestone springs and is piped to the distillery without peat contact, which gives the whiskies their mild, characteristic taste.
