Ardbeg is one of the most traditional distilleries on Islay. Whisky was unofficially distilled here as early as 1794, before John McDougall officially opened the distillery in 1815. The name "Ardbeg" comes from Gaelic and means "small hill" – fitting for the distillery's location on the south coast of the legendary whisky region of Islay, known for its peaty and maritime-influenced whiskies.
