Ardbeg is one of the most historic distilleries on Islay. Whisky had been distilled here unofficially since 1794, before John McDougall officially opened the distillery in 1815. The name ‘Ardbeg’ comes from Gaelic and means ‘little hill’ – fitting for the distillery’s location on the south coast of the legendary whisky region of Islay, which is renowned for its peaty and maritime-influenced whiskies.
