Founded in 1826 by James Henderson, the Pulteney Distillery, named after the then newly established Pulteneytown district in Wick, stands as one of Scotland's northernmost distilleries. Its unique location, only accessible by sea, shaped its history: barley arrived by ship and whisky left the distillery at the hands of workers who were also herring fishermen.

A significant modernization step occurred in 1958 under J&G Stodart Ltd, with the old floor maltings making way for today's visitor center. After various company acquisitions, the distillery eventually ended up with Inver House Distillers, who took over in 1995. A new era began with the introduction of the Old Pulteney 12 Years Old in 1997.

Today, far removed from its past as a herring fishing port, the Pulteney Distillery remains a proud part of Wick. Under the leadership of Malcolm Waring, the dedicated team produces around 900,000 liters of single malt Scotch whisky annually.

For the Old Pulteney Coastal Series, inspiration for the name and the production of the malts came from various coastal regions around the world. The whiskies receive their special finish in the typical casks of that coast, depending on the coastal region. This series consists of 4 whiskies in total, which are released annually.

The Old Pulteney Coastal Series Pineau des Charentes was inspired by the French coastal region north of Bordeaux. Maturation took place in Pineau des Charentes casks, which lend this unique whisky its wonderful nuances. The bottling is done without chill filtration and without added coloring.
