Description
Description
The recipe for this iconic beverage, developed in the mid-18th century by apothecary Kunze, originated when he was searching for a panacea. The drink, which quickly gained popularity, received royal approval from Empress Catherine II in 1781, ensuring it was enjoyed not only in Russia but also across generations and holds a firm place in tradition to this day.
An interesting fact about Riga Black Balsam is that it was once believed to have medicinal properties. It was used to treat a variety of ailments, from colds and flu to digestive problems and even snake bites. Although no medical claims can be made today, its unique taste remains and is definitely worth trying.
Riga Black Balsam is a harmonious blend of extracts from herbs, flowers, juices, roots, and berries, including linden blossoms, birch buds, valerian roots, raspberries, blueberries, and ginger, among others. Additionally, notes of nutmeg and black peppercorn lend the balsam its distinctive complexity.
Riga Black Balsam matures in oak barrels, which gives it its characteristic strength and the unmistakable bittersweet taste that makes it a special treat to this day.
