In 1821, William Smith founded the Wolfburn distillery on the outskirts of Thurso, named after a nearby stream. The distillery, built from robust Caithness flagstone, quickly developed into a significant malt whisky producer. The distillery remained family-owned until the 1850s and may have operated sporadically until the 1860s, though it was marked as a ruin on a map in 1872. A new building was erected near the old site.

The distillery's logo, designed in 2011, is based on a 16th-century drawing by Conrad Gessner and refers to the sea wolf, a local legend said to bring good fortune. The logo symbolizes the distillery's deep connection to Scottish culture and history.

The Wolfburn Batch 177 owes its name to its maturation in Warehouse 1, Row 77. This whisky was created by the careful marriage of eight-year-old first-fill bourbon cask and seven-year-old first-fill Caribbean rum cask. The result is a sweet and fruity composition that impresses with its taste.
