The Fuji Gotemba Distillery, which began production in November 1973, was established as a joint venture between Kirin, Seagram, and Chivas Brothers. While both malt and grain whisky are produced at the distillery, all steps of whisky production – from fermentation to bottling – take place on-site. After Kirin gained full control in 2002 following the dissolution of Seagram and renamed the distillery Kirin Distillery, they began to focus more on their connection to Mount Fuji, which led to the introduction of their first single malt in 2004.

According to the guidelines established by the Japan Spirits and Liqueur Makers Association in February 2021, this whisky meets the requirements to be considered a true Japanese whisky.
