The history of Wild Turkey began in 1869 with the founding of the Ripy Distillery on a hill now known as Wild Turkey Hill, above a gorge of the Kentucky River. In 1919, the distillery was closed due to Prohibition but reopened in 1933. Since 1941, Wild Turkey whiskeys have been produced in Lawrenceburg, Kentucky, by Austin Nichols.

The brand name Wild Turkey was established in 1940 when Thomas McCarthy, a manager at the Ripy Distillery, regularly brought the whiskey to turkey hunts, thus increasing its popularity.

Wild Turkey Kentucky Straight Bourbon, created by Master Distiller Eddie Russell, was introduced in 2011. This bourbon matures for six to eight years in carefully selected oak barrels, significantly longer than many other whiskies in its category. For storage, 81 American oak barrels with a "No. 4 char" toast level, also known as "Alligator Char," were used.

This Wild Turkey is not a lighter offshoot of the 101, like the earlier 80 Proof, but a completely new whiskey from Austin Nichols. With its unique maturation and careful selection of barrels, it clearly stands out from other bourbons and offers an unparalleled taste experience.
