Matthew Gloag, the eponymous grandson of the founder, took over the family business 96 years after its establishment in 1800. A year later, he created a new blend, which he named "The Grouse Brand" (Grouse = moorhen) with the expectation that many hunters would stop in Perth during hunting season. His daughter designed the accompanying label featuring the Scottish national bird. The whisky immediately sold so well that within just a few years, "The Famous" was added to the name and the designation "Brand" was simply dropped. And so the popular whisky is still called today: The Famous Grouse.

This Famous Grouse is created from a selection of Speyside Malts and Grains. Maturation, as well as the finish, takes place in sherry casks.

The label shows the Spanish capercaillie.
