Description
Description
Xoriguer Mahón Gin is a traditional gin speciality from the Balearic island of Menorca, with an alcohol content of 38 per cent in a 0.7-litre bottle. Its history is closely linked to the island’s centuries-old gin culture, which developed in the 18th century during British rule. The gin is produced by the long-established family business Xoriguer, whose roots go back to the early days of Menorcan gin production. One feature that sets it apart from many classic gins is the alcohol base used: Xoriguer is based on a distillate made from wine or grapes, to which juniper berries and a secret blend of other botanicals are added. This gives the gin a distinctive style that is closely linked to its Mediterranean origins.
Particularly noteworthy is the ‘Gin de Mahón’ Protected Geographical Indication, which links Xoriguer directly to Menorca and its local production tradition. After distillation, the gin is aged in oak casks before bottling – an unusual step in gin production which helps to round out its character. The combination of wine distillate, juniper, the Mediterranean gin tradition and barrel ageing makes Xoriguer Mahón Gin a clearly distinct alternative to classic London Dry Gins. In Menorca, it is also inextricably linked to the regional drinking culture and forms, amongst other things, the traditional basis for the ‘pomada’, a mixture of gin and lemonade.
